🇮🇳🇫🇷 Credit Score in France vs. India: What Indian Expats Need to Know

🧭 Introduction: A Common Question from Expats

“Can I check my credit score in France like I used to do with CIBIL in India?”

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive at L’Association Frehindi, especially from fellow Indians applying for loans or visas in India while living in France or the EU.

The confusion is natural—credit systems vary widely between countries. If you’re an Indian or South Asian national living in France and wondering about how creditworthiness works here, this blog will guide you through:

✅ What’s the difference between India’s CIBIL and France’s credit system?
✅ Can you obtain a credit report in France?
✅ What do you do when Indian banks ask for a CIBIL-equivalent report from France?
✅ How can our association help you in difficult documentation cases?

🧾 Understanding CIBIL in India

In India, personal credit scores are managed by agencies like:

  • CIBIL (TransUnion)

  • Equifax

  • Experian

  • CRIF High Mark

These agencies assign a credit score (typically 300–900) based on:

  • Loan repayments

  • Credit card usage

  • Outstanding debts

  • Defaults or late payments

This score is routinely checked by banks when you apply for loans, credit cards, or rentals.

❌ But France Doesn’t Use CIBIL-like Scores

In contrast, France does not have a personal credit scoring system like India or the USA. Here’s how the system is different:

🇮🇳 India (CIBIL) 🇫🇷 France (No universal score)
Numeric credit score No numeric score
Managed by private credit bureaus Managed by state-run institutions (e.g., Banque de France)
Can be checked online for a fee Reports only issued upon request, often in person or via FranceConnect
Used by all lenders Banks assess case-by-case based on income and account history

🔍 So, How Is Creditworthiness Checked in France?

Here’s how your financial reliability is evaluated in France:

1. Banque de France Reports

Banque de France maintains the following key databases:

  • FICP (Fichier des Incidents de remboursement des Crédits aux Particuliers): Lists unpaid loan defaults.

  • FCC (Fichier Central des Chèques): Lists bounced checks or banking bans.

✅ How to Request These Reports:

  • Go to accueil.banque-france.fr

  • Use FranceConnect or visit in person with valid ID.

  • Processing time: 1–2 working days

  • Language: French only (Must be translated if needed for use abroad)

2. Your Local Bank Statement or Certificate

You can ask your French bank to issue a:

  • Creditworthiness Certificate (Attestation Bancaire)

This document summarizes your financial standing—income, savings, credit card management, etc.

👉 Some banks may provide this in English. If not, use an official translator (traducteur assermenté).

📘 Community Cases: Real-Life Scenarios

🧑‍💼 Ravi from Marseille – Home Loan in India

Ravi, an engineer living in Marseille, applied for a home loan in India to buy a flat for his parents in Hyderabad. The Indian bank asked for his CIBIL score, but he didn’t have one in France.

What did he do?

He contacted Banque de France for his FICP & FCC reports and asked his French bank for a creditworthiness certificate. After translating the documents through an official translator, he submitted them to the Indian bank and got the loan approved.

🧕 Meena from Bordeaux – Visa Renewal Issue

Meena needed to renew her Schengen visa but was flagged due to a bounced cheque from a closed account. She didn’t even know she was listed in FCC.

L’Association Frehindi guided her to access her FCC file and resolve the issue with her former bank. Thanks to timely intervention, she got her new visa without further delay.
